Driving the next decade of research in Malawi: Achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals

The College of Medicine is pleased to announce that the 2017 Research Dissemination Conference will be held from 24th–25th November 2017 at the Mahatma Gandhi Campus in Blantyre, Malawi. This annual research dissemination conference is the premier gathering of local and international research scientists, public health practitioners and policy-makers. The theme of this year’s conference is: Driving the next decade of research in Malawi: Achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals. This two day conference will promote dialogue and critical reflection on the extent to which research has contributed towards achieving health-related sustainable development goals. In addition, the conference will examine latest local evidence, emerging health outcomes, as well as consider the implications for policy and programming for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being.
We are inviting presenters to submit abstracts relevant to any of the following thematic areas:

  • Communicable diseases (HIV and AIDS, Malaria, TB etc.)
  • Non-communicable diseases (Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes)
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health (Adolescent health, education, pregnancy and abortion, STDs and HIV and AIDS)
  • Mental health
  • Environmental health
  • Nutrition
  • Health systems and health policy (Leadership, Ethics and Governance)
  • Community systems strengthening research
  • Emerging issues (e.g. Injury and Trauma, Palliative Care, NTDs)

To submit an abstract: Presenters are required to use a template of the abstract that can be accessed on the following website: http://
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length and should include the following sections:
The specific thematic area the presentation addresses

  • Title
  • List of authors and their affiliations;
  • Introduction
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions

Please do not include citations, tables or figures. If your paper is co-written by more than one person, please indicate who will present and provide the contact details of the presenting author including telephone number and email address.
Send your abstract with the words “Abstract Submission for Oral Presentation” or “Abstract Submission for Poster Presentation” in the subject line. The abstracts should be submitted by email to by 17.00 hours, 18 August 2017.
Abstract reviews: The Conference Organisers will work with a Committee of experts to peer-review abstracts and successful presenters will be informed by the 17 September 2017.
Registration and payment information: Oral and poster presenters will be required to pay registration fees as follows:
1. Undergraduate and Postgraduate students: MK15,000
2. University of Malawi Faculty members: MK30,000
3. Other delegates: MK40,000
4. International Delegates: USD100
The fees will cover the cost of lunch, refreshments, the Malawi Medical Journal (September Issue), and the conference abstract booklet.
