Prof. William Stones

WilliamProfessor Stones is an academic obstetrician-gynaecologist with global and public health and implementation science interests. After graduating at University College London he undertook O&G specialist training and doctoral research in ovarian vascular biology. During 15 years at the University of Southampton he developed a programme of reproductive health research in low income countries with DFID support. He moved to Nairobi as Chair of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Aga Khan University in 2007 where he established a new MMed programme and a research site for the ‘Intergrowth-21st’ consortium defining international standards for fetal and newborn growth. During 2013-16 he held the Ann Gloag Chair of Global Health Implementation at the University of St Andrews, Scotland working in partnership with College of Medicine.

At the College of Medicine he undertakes doctoral supervision, MPH and MMed project supervision and teaching and provides clinical services at QECH. His research interests are in adolescent health and wellbeing through the ‘Global Early Adolescent Study’ and in maternal health and quality improvement. Internationally he serves on the FIGO Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health Committee.
